Leicester Invests £2M in Solar Panels and LED Lights for Council Buildings

Leicester is doing a green project. The city will install solar panels and LED lights at council-owned buildings. This will save taxpayers £392,000 each year. The mayor approved the plan.

Nineteen solar panel setups are planned, and new LED lights will replace old ones at twenty-five locations. This is part of Leicester’s climate action. LED lights have motion sensors, turning off when nobody is there, saving even more power. The council causes 1.5% of Leicester’s emissions, and this project helps reduce that.

Buildings cause most of the council’s pollution. They want to use less energy overall and plan to insulate buildings better. Also, they want greener heating and better tech. The plan saves money on energy costs. Some green changes take a long time to pay off.

This “Clean and Green Scheme” pays back sooner. Doing nothing would waste money and hurt the planet. Solar panels and lights will be installed at specific locations. Leicester Leys gets both solar panels and lights. Other locations only get one or the other.

Aylestone Leisure Centre, Leicester City Hall, and the Tudor Centre get new lights. Thurnby Lodge Community Centre, Belgrave Community Centre, Guildhall and Abbey Pumping Station also receive new lights. Braunstone Leisure Centre, Braunstone CYPFC, Dunblane Community Home, and 7-9 Every Street get solar panels.

Evington Library, Humberstone Golf Course, and several CYPFC locations will gain solar panels. Spence Street gym, York House, and Beaumonts Leys Library also benefit from solar panel installations. The project includes many places in Leicester.

Sulgrave Road, Westcotes Library, the Brite Centre, and Hamilton Library get lights. Several Leycroft Road locations and the Dawn Centre will also be upgraded with LED lighting. Gilroes Crematorium, Linwood Workshops, and the Spence Street swimming baths get lights.

Leycroft Road sites get both panels and lights. Kingfisher Youth Centre, Braunstone Leisure Centre, and Cossington Street baths are getting the new lighting. Others with new LED lights include King Richard III Visitor Centre and Leicester Creative Business. More places get solar panels too.
