After Hong Kong, Singapore, Corona cases increase in India. Currently 257 active cases across the country, 7 active patients in Gujarat.
New Delhi: An alarming increase in Corona cases is being recorded again in Southeast Asia. Cases have increased rapidly in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand, and now new cases of Corona virus have started being reported again in India. According to the Union Health Ministry, as of May 19, 2025, there are 257 active cases in the country, out of which Gujarat currently has 7 cases.
The situation in the world is alarming
Hong Kong had only 33 cases in March 2025, which has increased to 1042 by May. The positivity rate has also increased to 13.66 percent. Singapore reported an estimated 14,200 new cases between April 27 and May 3, compared to 11,100 in the previous week.
JN.1 variant a cause for concern
According to analysts, the JN.1 variant, which is a descendant of the BA.2.86 variant of Omicron, is responsible for the increasing cases in Southeast Asia. According to WHO, JN.1 has about 30 mutations. So far, the LF.7 and NB.1.8 variants have been reported the most.
Situation in Indian states including Gujarat
According to the figures, there are 95 cases in Kerala, 66 in Tamil Nadu, 56 in Maharashtra, 13 in Karnataka, 10 in Puducherry, 5 in Delhi, 2 in Rajasthan and 1 each in Haryana, Sikkim and West Bengal. 6 new cases have been reported in Gujarat in the last one week and the total active cases are 7.
Central government alert
In a review meeting held on May 19, the Health Ministry clarified that the current situation is under control. The current cases are very mild and the need for hospitalization is low. However, the Central Government has kept the health system on alert.
Need to be vigilant
While India has lifted many restrictions related to Corona in the last few months, it has become imperative for the general public to be vigilant considering the transmission of the new variant. Masks, social distancing and adherence to hygiene rules are still important.
